Newcastle Jockey Club has announced the appointment of Mr David Irwin as its new Chairman, following the previously announced retirement of Mr Brian Judd. The appointment was resolved at the NJC Board meeting held on 25 June.
Mr Irwin has served on the NJC Board since 2021 and has held the role of Vice Chairman since 2024.
Mr Irwin brings extensive governance and executive leadership experience to the role. He currently serves as Independent Chair of RailFirst and as a Non-Executive Director of Aries Rail within the Australian transport and logistics sector, and previously held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Pacific National until 2017. He has held senior executive, commercial and operational management positions within Asciano & Rio Tinto (including Port Waratah Coal Services).
Mr Irwin and his family have been actively involved in equestrian sports for over 30 years, with many Off The Track thoroughbreds having been owned and campaigned in Eventing during this time. The family have also been active racehorse owners for over 15 years.
David has combined both his experience and horse racing acumen during his time with the NJC, most notably through his prior leadership as Chairman of the Clubโs Projects Sub-Committee and currently the Precinct Masterplan Steering Committee.
With the Club in a strong operational and financial position, Mr Irwinโs appointment provides governance continuity and leadership as the aligned Board of Directors and management continue to build upon recent momentum and support Newcastle Jockey Clubโs long-term success. Mr Irwin paid tribute to Mr Juddโs contribution to the Club.
โI wish to thank Brian for his leadership, wisdom and direction, which have enabled the Club to perform strongly in recent times and progress the work needed to ensure Newcastle Jockey Club remains sustainable, successful and an important part of the Newcastle communityโ.โ
โI am excited about what the future holds for Newcastle Jockey Club. The Club is in a strong position with an enviable racing program, a loyal membership base and deep connections across the Newcastle community. As we look ahead, our focus is on building on these strengths, enhancing the on-course experience for members and patrons, and ensuring the Club’s continued success and sustainability for generations to come.โ
Mr Irwin will be supported by newly appointed Vice Chairman, Mr Alex Wheeler. Mr Wheeler has been a Board Director since 2018 and is Chairman of the Projects Sub-Committee. Both appointments are effective from 1 July 2026.
