The Newcastle Herald Hunter Race Day

the stage is set for the hunter’s richest race

Dust off your favourite spring frock and suit jacket because one of the biggest days on the Newcastle social calendar is racing up around the bend.

The Newcastle Herald Hunter race day returns to Broadmeadow on Saturday, November 14, as trainers and jockeys battle for a $1 million prize purse.

Last year, the then 8-year-old gelding Coal Crusher, trained by Warwick Farm’s Joseph Pride, became the first horse in the Hunter’s seven-year history to win the 1300-metre race twice, after its 2023 victory.

While the fields for the Hunter’s richest race day are yet to be confirmed, the off-track entertainment is sealed.

DJ Hot Dub Time Machine and party band Hot Potato Band will entertain the Newcastle Racecourse crowd, and the “faces” of the 2025 Hunter, Eleebana’s Selina McCloskey and Ben Blackler, of Belmont North will hand over their mantle to a fresh duo.

Hot Dub Time Machine has previously headlined Hunter Valley music festivals and performed at last year’s Boxing Day races at Broadmeadow.

“The Hunter is our biggest race day of the year and an event that Newcastle can be incredibly proud of,” Newcastle Jockey Club Chief Executive Officer Duane Dowell said.

“It’s a day that brings our community together while showcasing our region to a national audience.

“With $1 million in prizemoney and some of the country’s best thoroughbreds competing on our track, the racing is undoubtedly the centrepiece, but what makes the Hunter so special is everything that surrounds it.

“We’ve worked hard to create an event that appeals to everyone, whether you’re a passionate racing enthusiast, a first-time racegoer or simply looking for a fantastic day out with friends.”
