The Kris Lees trained two-year-old filly, She’s Extra, landed a huge plunge when she blitzed her opposition in the opening event at Saturday’s Newcastle Jockey Club race meeting. It was her trainer’s birthday on Saturday and the youngster gave Lees plenty to celebrate with a 4-1/2 length victory in the 900 metre 2-year-old Maiden Handicap.
She’s Extra was on debut following one barrier trial which she won comfortably at Scone on January 30 and Lees apprentice Williams Stanley was in the saddle on Saturday. The filly shared the lead to halfway down the home straight where she careered away for an easy win clocking a very quick 32.42 for the last 600 metres. The TAB’s Tim Ryan said on Sky Thoroughbred Central that She’s Extra was backed from $6.50 into her starting price of $2.45.
The winner was sold by Wagga’s Kooringal Stud at the 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale where Lees purchased her for $60,000.
Another Newcastle trained galloper, The Magic Man, trained by Paul Perry also landed a hefty plunge when successful in the 1200 metre Manning Valley Free Range Eggs Midway Maiden Handicap. The 3-year-old had been winless in eleven previous starts and he was $9.50 when TAB commenced betting on the race.
He was backed into $4.80 and his supporters would not have been confident in the first half of the race when the gelding was three wide racing fiercely at the tail of the field. Jockey Lee Magorrian wisely let The Magic Man sprint around the field to race to a clear lead 600 metres from home and from thereon he was never threatened scoring by just under a length.
